Everyone knows Donald Trump is obsessed with Twitter. But Hillary Clinton, it turns out, is the real winner on the social media platform.
Two Clinton tweets were the most retweeted political messages in 2016, while The Donald was runner-up with one of his tweets being third most retweeted, according to Twitter data sent to Mashable.
Heartwarming messages, sharp one-liners, and cutesy birthday shout-outs were among the nine most retweeted political tweets of 2016.
Like the political tweets, trending topics and hashtags also told the story of 2016 -- a year that saw police brutality, a mass shooting targeting the LGBT community, unexpected international shifts like the Brexit vote and the unprecedented election of a reality star businessman as U.S. president.
Not too surprisingly, #Election2016 was the most popular trending topic in news and politics. It was followed by Brexit, #BlackLivesMatter, #LoveisLove, #PrayforOrlando, Alton Sterling, #InternationalWomensDay, Panama Papers, #PrayforNice and Turkey.
Without further ado, here are the top political tweets of the year (No. 1 might make you tear up):
